[ejabberd] ejabberdctl node name woes

Look inside ejabberdctl script. It's likely that it has a call to "erl
-name something". If so, replace -sname for -name.

Another common problem is a cookie problem. ejabberd and ejabberdctl
must use the same cookie file. Just run both using the same user
account (or the same home directory).
