Your problem is in this sentence:

You didn't append the / to the dirname, hence the browser later
doesn't append the chatroom dir correctly.
The solution is simple: start to browse using this URL:
This way, when the HTML includes this content:
<a href='testroom at conference.example.org/'>testroom at conference.example.org/</a>
your browser will build the correct URL for the link:
