Do you mean ports?

cause writing your own line protocol to talk between the two processes
is not nearly as nice as having one written for you already (like
AMQP)

I tend to do this as well, but I think there's something to be said
for a software package that already ensures multiple concurrent writes
/ reads and has taken care of some of the work for me :)
