so, i deleted the entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/group and
resinstalled.  this changed uid and gid from 522 to 543.

i now get an erlang crash dump, appended.  [attachment 72k too large.

i am trying to rebuild erlang, but hitting a password issue getting 
JDK US DST Timezone Update Tool - 1_3_12.  eventually, sun will get my
reset request, sigh.
