Well, it turned out to be one of those rare cases where not the client
code is at fault, but the server's so the traffic dump is useless, but
anyway one hint for the future: to capture a tcp session with tcpdump
means not copying and pasting its diagnostic output to a console but
rather running something like
# tcpdump -s 0 -w /tmp/session.pcap 'tcp and port 5222'
and then gzip'ing and attaching the resulted /tmp/session.pcap file.

Such a capture file can then be viewed by tcpdump itself or a more
fancy tool such as Wireshark GUI program.
